Out of Hours Emergencies    Return to top
All out of hours care is now the responsibility of the Conwy Local Health Board and is provided by Morfadoc in a purpose built GP Emergency Centre situated at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan.

The service operates between 6pm and 8am on weekdays and from 6pm on Friday until 8am Monday and all Bank Holidays.

To contact this service telephone our usual number:-

0844 477 8574

Your call will be answered by a receptionist who will request your details. You will then speak to a nurse who may be able to advise you. If not then you will be able to speak to a doctor who will advise if a consultation is necessary. If so you will be asked to attend the Emergency Centre. All calls to Morfa-Doc are recorded.

Remember that this is an emergency service only so please do not telephone for routine matters.

Practice Nurse Services    Return to top
The Practice Nurses hold clinics throughout the day Monday to Friday, their consultations are by appointment only. They provide a range of services including chronic disease management for asthma and diabetes, travel vaccination advice, cervical smears and childhood immunisations. The Nurses are trained to advise about giving up smoking and weight loss. When you join the Practice you will be offered a new patient examination with one of the Nurses.

Appointments with the Practice Nurses can be made at reception.

Health Visitor    Return to top
Health Visitor, Mrs Carol Pritchard works from the practice. Direct line telephone number 523608. The Child Health Clinic is held on Tuesday afternoons.

The Health Visitors role is to advise and help parents and their children in the early years of childhood. She will advise with regard to childhood immunisations and give the vaccinations at the appropriate age.

Health Visitors have a statutory duty to visit all new born children, from ten days after birth. They also play an important role in child protection.

Midwife    Return to top
A Midwife led ante-natal clinic is held on a Thursday morning. The Midwife will advise you about your ante-natal care and provide you with information about the birth of your child. After delivery the Midwife will attend you until ten days after the birth. The Midwife can be contacted via the surgery or via the Delivery Suite at Glan Clwyd Hospital Bodelwyddan, telephone 01745 534145.

Contraception    Return to top
All the Doctors can provide advice on contraception. If you require emergency contraception please contact the Surgery as soon as possible as this is more effective if taken early. The Practice does not fit coils or subcutaneous contraceptive implants (contact the Family Planning Clinic- details at reception).

Cervical Smears    Return to top
We run a recall system for cervical smears. You may have a smear taken by any of the Doctors or Nurses.

Immunisations and Travel     Return to top
The Practice provides all childhood immunisations and most of those needed for foreign travel. Some travel vaccinations are not available on the NHS, those that are not must be issued on as a private prescription and the full price of the vaccine paid at the pharmacist. We will charge a fee for administering the vaccine. Details are available at reception or from the Practice Nurses.

Please see also section 'Travel Advice'in other on-line services for more comprehensive general advice about travel.

Minor surgery    Return to top
All the Doctors provide a limited range of minor surgery. We offer liquid nitrogen treatment for warts and small skin lesions and certain joint injections.

Private medical services    Return to top
We provide all necessary medical care and treatment on the N.H.S. unless specifically asked otherwise. We do not accept private patients. However some services e.g. some travel vaccinations and certain reports/certificates for insurances and none N.H.S. purposes are not covered by our contract with the N.H.S. We make a charge for these services in line with the recommended B.M.A. rates.

Medical students    Return to top
This Practice is a training Practice for final year medical students from the University of Liverpool. Usually the student will see patients initially and then will present the case to the Doctor who will then see you with the student.

You will be asked when you make your appointment if you mind seeing the student, you are under no obligation to do so. If you do not wish to see the student please inform the receptionist.

The Doctors of the Practice feel it an honour to have such senior students at the Practice and hope you will help with their education. Please remember that your preferred Doctor will have gone through similar educational experiences.

Children and Young People    Return to top
The practice believes that children and young people should be protected at all times. If you have any complaint or concerns about any issues please contact Mrs Diane Lewis, Practice Manager, one of the partners or Health Visitor.

Minor Illness (1)    Return to top

Antibiotic use
Antibiotics are important and have led to a revolution in the management of infectious disease. However due to antibiotic resistance they are becoming less effective against certain types of bacterial infection. It is important to use them responsibly so that we reduce the risk of resistant bacteria in the future.

Most simple upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses on which antibiotics have no effect at all - remember they only work for bacterial infections. If your doctor feels that the likelihood is that your infection is caused by a virus then he or she will recommend simple measures such as paracetamol to treat the symptoms as your body’s immune system deals with the virus.

Please do not feel your doctor does not understand how ill you feel or is refusing you treatment if you are not given antibiotics for a viral illness as they will have no benefit to you but you may still experience side effects. It is very important for your future health that antibiotics are still effective if you develop serious bacterial infection.

Nose Bleeds
Sit in a chair (leaning forward with your mouth open) and pinch your nose just below the bone for approximately 10 minutes, by which time the bleeding should have stopped. Avoid hot drinks or hot food for 24 hours. If bleeding does not stop, contact your doctor immediately.
Sore Throats/Tonsillitis
Most sore throats get better within a few days whatever treatment is given. Most are caused by viruses and therefore do not respond to antibiotics. Take analgesics e.g. paracetamol and suck lozenges for relief of symptoms.

Burns
Apply large quantities of cold water to the affected area as soon as possible and maintain this until the pain subsides. This may take as long as 15 minutes! If the skin is unbroken but blistered, apply a loose, dry dressing. If the burn is larger than 4 or 5 inches in diameter, or if the skin is broken, consult your doctor as soon as possible, or attend your local casualty unit.

Chest Pain
Doctors take all chest pains very seriously as it may indicate a serious condition like a heart attack. Your doctor may be able to able to advise you, but if the pain is severe and lasts for more than 15 minutes – please call 999.

Minor Illness (2)    Return to top

Accidents and Injuries
It is usually best to attend the casualty department, but your Doctor may be able to give advice.

Colds
Even in this day an age there is still no magic cure for the common cold. Go to bed, take plenty of drinks. If you have a headache or are feverish, then decongestants may be useful for a few days along with paracetamol or other such analgesics. Do not bother to take any antibiotics you may have in the house - these will have no effect!

Diarrhoea and Vomiting
The main treatment aim here is to prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of clear fluids. Vomiting usually settles within a few hours, if it persists beyond 24 hours consult your doctor. In adults and older children, Kaolin mixture will help reduce the diarrhoea after the worst is over. Diarrhoea, especially with vomiting as well, in very young children and babies needs careful attention. The current advice is to continue feeding the baby with milk and solids. In older children it may be advisable to give fluids only until the child is better. If the symptoms are accompanied by vomiting, weakness or drowsiness then you should consult your Doctor.

Chaperone    Return to top
A chaperone is always available if required

Carers    Return to top
The practice recognises that caring for a friend or relative, whether formally or informally, occasionally presents its own problems. Please inform your doctor if you are a carer, so that he/she can help you obtain appropriate advice to enable you to deal with any problems encountered.

Private Room    Return to top
We will endeavour to ensure a private room is available if you need privacy to speak to a receptionist. Sometimes we may have to ask for your patience as because of the fact that our building is often running to full capacity, a room may not be immediately available.

Mammography    Return to top
As well as regular breast self-examination, all women aged 50-65 years can have this X-ray test every three years. You should receive an appointment from Breast Test Wales (contactable on 01492 860888) appropriate intervals.
